WFHB and the Lotus World Music and Arts Foundation have always shared close ties with each other and the Bloomington community. Our first broadcast hit the airwaves in 1993; Lotus threw its first festival a year later, bringing culture bearers from around the world into various Bloomington venues, including the WFHB studios. Now, a small team of Lotus staff is chronicling those years with the initiative Lotus@30. Project co-managers Jeremy Reed and LuAnne Holladay dropped by the Firehouse to tal

2020 Lotus Artist Feature: Tuuletar

Fierce energy, beatbox rhythms, and other-worldly harmonies: TUULETAR (Goddess of The Wind in Finnish mythology) is taking Finnish music abroad with a novel approach. The band’s virtuoso singers create a sonic landscape, where beatbox rhythms meet global influences and Finnish poetry tradition. With freshly invigorating original music, Tuuletar enchants audiences globally with their heartfelt, tribal, and captivating spirit.

Interview with Paul Beaubrun of Boukman Eksperyans

Boukman Eksperyans is a mizik rasin (roots music) band that regularly tours the world as a favorite on the world music circuit. Founded in Haiti 40 years ago, the group merges traditional Haitian instruments and sacred Vodou rhythms with rock and reggae. Co-founders Lòlò and Manzè (Théodore Beaubrun, Jr. and Mimerose Beaubrun) have long been deeply invested in their community through their scholarship on Haitian cultural and spiritual practices. In particular, they are known for their environmen

2019 Lotus Live – Lula Wiles

Long before they were a band, the members of Lula Wiles sang folk songs and traded fiddle tunes at camp in Maine. The trio, all of whom grew up in rural Maine, carry those lessons of community and the meaning of shared art with them as they create music that explores cultural virtues, soothes aching wounds, and envisions a better world. Their singing includes clear vocals and lovely three-part harmonies, and they are steady, stronger player on acoustic and electric guitars, fiddles, and upright

2019 Lotus Live – Les Filles De Illighadad

Les Filles are from Illighadad, a secluded commune in central Niger, in the scrubland deserts at the Sahara’s edge. They draw on the traditional tende music of rural Niger that inspired Tuareg blues. The sparse music, which is built from a few elements (vocals, handclaps, percussion), is also dominated by women. Lead vocalist Fatou Seidi Ghali is one of the only Tuareg female guitarists in Niger. In lieu of the djembe or drum kit popular in Tuareg rock bands, Les Filles de Illighadad incorporate

Lotus Live – Afrotronix

Electronic music meets Afrobeat. Born in Chad but now based in Montreal, Afrotronix creates what he calls “an electronic futurist package” by drawing on and sampling from (for example) Mandinka music of West Africa, Saharan Tuareg blues, Senegalese rumba, Chadian sai, dubstep, EDM, and reggae. And he takes his futuristic aesthetic seriously: expect his signature all-white clothing and a helmet that’s somewhere between “a highly-stylized combination of Alien and Sonic The Hedgehog.” Take club bea

Lotus Live – Adilei – 4/9/19

Ensemble Adilei performs traditional Georgian polyphonic songs and chants. Gurian music is sometimes compared to jazz, because of the emphasis on improvisation, and non-parallel movement in all the voice parts. Gurian song is also characterized by k’rimanch’uli , a yodeling technique often present in the upper voice.

The ensemble has toured in a number of European countries, and participated in several notable folk music festivals, including the International Symposium on Traditional Polyphony

People from Bloomington: A Short Story Collection from Indonesia

The Indonesian writer Budi Darma came to Bloomington, in 1974. Like so many people who come to Bloomington, he was here for school. He was already an established literary figure in Indonesia, as a writer of absurdist short stories. He came here to get a Master’s degree in creative writing, then a PhD in literature. His dissertation was on Jane Austen, if you’re curious about that kind of thing. But more importantly for our purposes: while he was here, he started writing stories inspired by the p

Southern Rock, Midwestern Soul

For music critic Stephen Deusner, songwriters fall into one of two camps. There are the ones who have something they want to tell you, and then there are the ones who want to figure something out. For him, the longevity of the Drive-By Truckers comes from their residence in the second camp. For decades now, they’ve been writing smart, complex songs whose characters add complexity to our picture of rural America, especially the South. Stephen’s book about the Truckers, Where the Devil Don’t Stay:
